The Little Owl in the Rafters
The memory is fairly clear. We were in Wisconsin for a week in spring and it was 'sugaring' time. The building was a shed without walls in the forest near the 'sugar bush.' A brick stove with a huge iron kettle stood in the middle, full to the brime with maple syrup slow-cooking. The process lasted all night, and a tired 10-yr old lasted most of it. Somewhere in the night, a saw-whet called his high and sweet song from above in the rafters, seeminly unaware of the smoke and people below. I remember it well, the sound of a saw file being dragged slowly across a metal handsaw.
It was the way my family did things. Expose you to everything wild and let 'nature' take it's course. Here I am, 50 years later and still painting the little owls I heard so long ago.
