In 1973, when I first began painting the boats of Humboldt Bay, California, things were different. I lived south of there in Ferndale. I was trying to make a living as an artist in a community that lived in the past - memories of cutting timber, catching fish and cows chewing things were everywhere. It was not uninteresting.
There were fish, at least enough to still make a living, and the Woodly Island Marina had not yet been built. Boats were usually rafted three deep during salmon season, and in season were sometimes six or more deep. The rotting old waterfront buildings were dangerous to move around on but looked great to anyone with an artistic eye. The boats were equally "rugged" with equipment that never should have crossed the bar even on a calm day.
But the fish are gone, and so are most of those classic old buildings. It is increasingly difficult these days to find good dock scenes to paint, so I often use artistic license and combine several views to create one strong design for a painting. This one was actually exactly this way.
