The Forest Floor
I get down on my stomach in these places, pretend maybe that I'm a deer mouse working my way home. The smell of centuries of decaying needles, warm sorrel leaves, dry twigs greet my nose as if it's perfume. High above the trees arch overhead as if they're going to fall over. How high above? Well, some of those cloud-sweepers could be taller than a 35-story building.
All this detail here, the columbine, sorrel, starflower, tiny mushrooms and fungi, some convergant lady bugs, little salamanders - it's what I really love to paint.
