The Green
People say the Pacific Northwest is green, but then they usually haven't seen Kentucky. Now that's green. Mammoth Cave is eastern old-growth forest. Most is gone now, but the entire state once looked like this. In Davy Crocket's day, they say a squirrel could travel through the treetops from the Ohio to the Atlantic without touching the ground.
When asked to paint a mural of Mammoth Cave, I remember saying "forget the Cave, I want to paint the GREEN, the old-growth beach and oak forests that fill the surface of that great park. Okay, I'll added a cave entrance to make it work, but it was the forest that held my eye. Still does!
