Remembering a "Moment"
There I was, teaching a National Park Field Seminar for the park and the University of California. I don't teach much, but this was fun. Everyone was spread out with easels and chairs, paint boxes and papers. An elk showed up, a big bull, but I didn't see any females and so it seemed fairly safe. Besides, the elk was on the other side of a six-foot diameter redwood log.
Suddenly, that elk was over the log and charging into our group. People scattered for cars, while the elk thrashed at the easels, tossing them about like matchsticks.
In the end, no one was hurt and everyone felt the experience was more than worth it. I thought it was the best nature class I'd ever taught.
