The First Bridge
It was a place I knew well, a place I often took classes to teach painting redwoods for summer field seminars and Elderhostels. The park superintendent was retiring and I was to paint his park retirement present. "Better than a gold watch" I remember saying to the ranger who worked with me. It was his favorite place, Lost Man Creek, just at the first bridge, stand there and face east, just where the marbled murrelets come flying out a sunrise.
I knew the place, I did the painting - and - I never got paid! Well, I DID get paid, but it wasn't with money (if you know what I mean).
