Puffins
The trick to painting any black bird is to NOT make the feathers black. They reflect the light in interesting ways and create colors that are anything but black. We have puffins here in the Straits of Juan deFuca, and see them almost every time we cross over to the San Juans Islands or Victoria. They fish for small smelt, candlefish or othe skinny and slippery fish, and hold upwards of a half-dozen in their mouths at once. It's a sight to see, a puffin carrying little fish all lined up in a row in that crazy mouth.
