Barn Shanty Bridge - Big Quil River
About 30 minutes south of our home, and two miles from the trailhead, the level Big Quil Trail drops down to two bridges over the river. This bridge, made from two old-growth logs, spans the river at its narrowest point, and made a marvelous green scene of life in the old-growth forest. This isn't Olympic National Park, but National Forest. Prints are available in the Print section.

Salmon Cascades
We were on a field trip to Sol Duc Valley of Olympic National Park, about 70 miles west of our home. I was getting information for an upcoming project, and we stopped at Salmon Cascades to see if salmon were there. They were, circling below the falls awaiting energy enough to make the jump. Prints are available in the Print section.

The Swallow and the Skiff
We were anchored in Watmough Bay for the evening. No wind; no swells - and the skiff drifted into the stern. Then, this little violet-green swallow came by to catch insects. A perfect evening.
Prints are available, as is the original painting.

Painted Hills, Fossil Beds National Monument in Eastern Oregon
This is a commission for the Crater Lake Institute, an organization that has allowed me to paint much of the Oregon park landscape. Crater Lake, Lava Beds, Fossil Beds - all have been destinations for us on research trips.
This painting will become jigsaw puzzles for 2009. Stay tuned.

Four Rowboats
The Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle has the best small boats in Puget Sound, all gathered around these docks and awaiting the next row. It's a place I return to often.
Prints are available, as is the original painting.

Flags Over Olympus
" Olympus comes to Port Townsend fairly often, and when she does she often ties up close to our own boat, Sea Witch. During the Wooden Boat Festival in September, she hauls up the signal flags, making all that brass, bronze and varnished wood look ever more appealing.

Martha
"One of my favorite Port Townsend boats, century-old Martha is a youth-training vessel owned by friends that have done just a wonderful job keeping her going. I consider it a true quality of life to sail beside this historic craft."

Able
A good friend owns this fine wooden boat. Built in Port Townsend, it has been a fixture here in town for many years. I've always admired all the seemingly tangled mass of bowsprit weaving - something that our boat, Sea Witch, has none of. The hooded mergansers come into the marina in winter, fishing at the stormwater outfalls for small fish attracted there by nutrients.
This is an acrylic on paper, and prints are now available.

Obstruction Point, Olympic National Park.
This image is destined to be made into jigsaw puzzles, posters and probably cards for Olympic National Park. I've wanted to paint this scene for years. From this ridge, if you turn 180 degrees, it's possible to see our home forest 25 miles below in the distance. This is the dry side of the Olympics, and because of its isolation, there are many plants and animals that have to evolved to grow only here - the Olympic Marmot, Olympic Chipmunk, Olympic Weasel and others.
It's a special place for Nancy and I that few ever see. The original painting is 24" x 36" and is acrylic on paper board. It's currently available for sale.

Christie
I painted this beautiful skiff from materials I had from a past Wooden Boat Festival back in 2000. If anyone knows about this boat, we'd sure like more information. It's not listed in the Festival archieves, so it might be a tender for a much larger vessel.
