Life on the Rim
Mammoth Crater – Lava Beds National Monument
Lava flows and caves cover most of this rugged and stark landscape on the California Oregon border. Upslope, in wooded country just before the Monument boundary, is impressive, sheer sided Mammoth Crater, the source of much of the lava that flowed northward to create what we see here today. This area around the enormous cylindrical cone-shaped hole in the ground harbors an abundant amount of wildlife, all contributing to a grand experience for the visitor.
